Self improvement: Uncovering our true selves.

For most of us, the sort of instant conversion to the ultimate truth or perception of the universe and its secrets is probably not going to happen overnight. That usually only happens to historical religious figures, genuine mystics and the occasional scam artist and wannabe cult leader.

No, for the majority of us, we have to live in our common reality and make the best of it as much as we know how. That isn’t to say though that the world is fixed. I believe our reality can change dramatically and powerfully if we are open and we let it but generally the process is slower and more gradual than that. Emotional and spiritual growth can come suddenly, forcefully, but that is often the result of a lot of time working on ourselves and passionately desiring that change in our lives.

The slower way is more reliable and consistent, even if it means one month, six months, or over several years, you can make incredible changes to your life and your way of living it.

What about quick fixes?

The techniques that we have at our disposal from physical exercises, laws of attraction and manifestation, meditations etc are dependable, usable ways for us to uncover our natural state of being which has been there all the time. These methods allow us to see through all this shadow and murkiness that hides the power of our being and our true nature. They are necessary and useful and should be pursued.

I prefer to think of it like this: I am the person I want to be already. I already exist and always have but I need to find my way back to that person. I am already whole and complete, it’s just hidden by all this other stuff I’ve learnt about the world and a lot of that is wrong. The more I contemplate this the more it makes sense for me.

Now I’m not talking about life skills or manners; I’m talking about not being happy with the person you see in the mirror every morning. Constantly thinking we need to change, fix, correct something as basic as whom we are takes an incredible amount of energy and leads to complete exhaustion of the mind and spirit. It’s debilitating and it causes years of frustration and unhappiness. At the heart of our daily improvement routines whatever they are, should be the concept of acceptance. The idea of that there is nothing that needs ‘fixing’ because in ‘reality’ there is nothing broken.

An acceptance of who we are and where we are is a solid foundation from which to proceed on our journey of uncovering our true selves. It is not the quicksand of get-better quick solutions or affirmative sticking plasters on deep emotional wounds.

People develop at different rates and speeds; there is nothing wrong with that. Take your time, find the techniques that are good for you, talk to like-minded people, join a yoga class, a theosophy class, tai chi whatever. This will keep your higher goals in a state of readiness and at the forefront of your mind and in your heart and you will be led along the right path.
